Antique 18k Gold Pendant with Australian Boulder Opal

This fabulous Boulder Opal pendant reminds us of those photos of Earth taken from space- pieces of the host rock ironstone within the gem look like continents, while the Opal takes on blue & green flashes like the oceans and a violet overtone like the atmosphere hovering over the top. Fascinating! This item started its life as an Edwardian brooch but, sadly, the pin stem was missing, so we opted to convert it to a more wearable pendant form. The sizable Australian Opal is wrapped in rich 18k yellow gold which makes up the bezel and rim around the gem. When this pendant was made, the gold was acid-washed, giving it a soft glow and matte look, which we mimicked on the modern bail.
