This late Victorian pendant is a study in contrasts. The base of the piece is an oval tablet of onyx upon which the gold framework is set. This upper piece is set with a central Opal and rose cut Diamonds which pop against the black background. The Opal is Australian in origin and the crystal variety which is highly translucent, allowing the red, green and blue hues to dance within the gem and leap off the pendant, toward the viewer. While the pendant is dainty, just over an inch long with the bail, the Diamonds are sparkly and the Opal is filled with color that pops on the neckline. *We believe that this piece started it’s life as a pin and was converted to a pendant sometime in the last century.
Details: 14k yellow gold pendant with onyx tablet, .25ct oval Australian Opal, and .26ctw round rose cut Diamond accents (SI JK), circa 1880.
