Meet Our Staff

Rene Criss became owner and operator of Federal Way Custom Jewelers since 1981.  After years of relationship building he has many international contacts and access to the finest gemstones in the world.  Perfectly cut diamonds are just the beginning of the “Criss-stonian” experience known by anyone who has visited his store.  As the store’s primary buyer and a designer, he personally meets with cutters from around the world every six months and chooses each individual stone for its unique beauty. 

Rene leads our staff in extensive knowledge of rare and exotic gems.  It is our mission to expose our clients to the world’s finest sapphires of every color, deep blue/purple tanzanite, extraordinary black opals, a rainbow of colors in garnet, spinel and all the rarest stones that are not available in the malls and chain stores.  Beautiful custom jewelry starts with exceptional stones.  Under his mentoring and provisions, we are all deeply passionate about our participation in the family business.  As a result, we have been blessed with success and a well earned reputation for high quality jewelry.  We take special pleasure in getting to know his customer's preferences, buying stones and designing special pieces that match those preferences perfectly.  

Lorraine Meckley-Criss joined Rene’ in marriage shortly before she joined him in business.  They often joke that he pushes and she steers.  Two people could not be more opposite, nor more complementary to one another.  As a result of their union, Federal Way Custom Jewelers has dramatically increased its business while  Rene’ has become free to “share the love” and beauty of  the world of diamonds, gemstones and design. 

Lorraine has been instrumental in steering the business toward greater success.  Her experience and skills in business, marketing, information systems, and personnel management were just the strengths needed to round out Rene’s skills.  Together they are both doing what they love, while enjoying greater success, growing relationships and the company.

Ben Lessley, a Puget Sound native, joined Federal Way Custom Jewelers in 2004.  Since that time, he has built a portfolio of custom pieces for many of our clients.  He too holds (GIA) Gemological Institute of America certifications: AJP (Accredited Jewelry Professional); Jewelry Essentials, Colored Stones and Diamonds. 

 Although he is a collector of gemstone-quality color stones, it is apparent that among his favorite clients are the folks planning to propose.  He sincerely listens, educates, guides and can provide an unlimited choice of stones to fit his client’s vision.  Ben is a romantic, with immediate worldwide resources for diamonds.  In addition to our direct inventory, there are no limits to the selection of diamonds that can be acquired for our clients within days. 

 As is true to his caring heart, it is important to Ben that we share a bit of his “human side.”  His perfect evening at home requires a good pillow, WWE wrestling - soap opera for men…” and strawberry pop.  On occasion, he escapes to the beach for renewal and kite flying.  While Ben is well established in the jewelry trade, he is concurrently pursuing a Masters degree in counseling, and serving as a member of Steven Ministry at Overlake Church, in Redmond, WA.  He plans to complete a Doctorate in Ministry.
